dcterms.description | In developing countries considerable quantities of sawdust and other particulate residues are generated by local industries. These residues, a potential source of energy, are often discarded as a waste product. Engineers at the Natural Resources Institute (NRI) have designed a simple and robust system that utilizes waste sawdust to provide process heat for industrial applications. The design and development of this cyclonic suspension burner was successfully field tested under commercial operating conditions to fuel a timber drying kiln in Belize, and is described in a report just published. The technology has the added advantage of saving energy costs, conserving finite energy sources and avoiding the discharge of obnoxious black smoke. A multi-chamber furnace for burning groundnut shells and rice husks has also been developed. Details of its design and operation will be the subject of a separate report to be published later.
