Definitions first: Gender is not about biology. It is 'a social factor, at the heart of how societies organise themselves to produce and reproduce, consume and distribute'. Taking gender into account means asking basic questions: Who does what, how and why? Gender analysis is a way of rethinking current practices (in the use and management of natural resources, economic trends, population changes), and of appreciating the importance of specific aspects of men and women. A new booklet from the German development agency GTZ, Gender-Orientation in the Post Harvest Sector, provides useful guidelines for identifying gender-specific issues. It summarises detailed surveys and analyses of the rôles and tasks of the various stakeholders in the post-harvest sector. It is a valuable tool for all those working on project planning, because it explains the specific problems and interests of men and women, in a sector where the latter play a key role and much remains to be done in improving their conditions of work and life.
