| dcterms.description | We are, as people, united by our diversity. We are, as persons, each unique. The way we feed ourselves, organise our own lives, touch other people s, the way we mourn and rejoice, are all different. We each do them all, but in our own way. We have much in common. Take the way we extract our nutrition from the rest of nature, so that we may survive and procreate. We call it agriculture. Agriculture is not a marginal notion, not a passing fashion, not an idea that sometimes seems to have fallen off the agenda of those to whom we have entrusted or not our global governance. We may have varying beliefs, worldviews, and interpretations of natural phenomena, we surely have different perspectives, we may live more and more in towns, but we all need to eat. Another commonality is the way we seem to see circles and cycles. The circle of life, the wheel of life, the cycle of seasons, the nutrient cycle, the water cycle. The list is, like circles, endless. Agriculture, a circle of cycles, is about life. As people, we seem also to share a need to stop every now and then and take stock, look back and look forward. Some ancient spirits say that these moments are ceremonies to remind us of our position in the world. One such moment, no less artificial than any other, is The Millennium that point where the world leaves one era of time, the second millennium, and moves into the next, the third. It is the way of measuring time that is shared by most of the world, even though most of the world does not share the belief that gave the starting date. And, as a world we cannot even wait patiently until the date when, mathematically speaking, the change of millennium actually occurs when the years 2000 and 2001 meet. No matter. The sooner we look forward, the better. For Spore readers and writers, we know that today and tomorrow we all need to eat. And as a world, we have not got that organised. Not yet. | en |
