dcterms.description | Blue buckets, blue pots or any blue container are irresistible to the Blister beetle (Mylabris sp.). If those containers are filled with soapy water, a simple, but very effective trap can be made because the beetles fall in and drown. It was farmers in Lesotho who found that the beetles were attracted to the colour blue. The large, black-and-yellow Blister beetle is a strong flier and causes severe damage to bean and cowpea crops by eating the flowers and pollen. It is difficult to control by the usual method, which is to pick them off the crops. The larvae are also difficult to control as they live in the soil. Farmers in Lesotho take any blue containers, fill them with soapy water and place them around the crop. In the evening it is not long before the trap has claimed several victims. It is important, though to have the inside of the container showing blue. If the outside of the bucket is blue the beetles tend to hit the side and do not fall into the soapy water. Success has also been achieved by digging holes and lining the holes with blue plastic bags. The Local Initiative Support Project, Quting, Lesotho, SOUTHERN AFRICA | en |
