Agriculture is recognized as central to the socio-economic development of ACP countries where up to 60% of the economically active population are engaged in the sector. Governments and international organizations expend a great deal of effort and resources in research, extension and training geared at increasing agricultural productivity and thereby ensuring food security for the rural populations. In order to achieve increased productivity, the institutions and individuals involved in this sector must be able to harness information; but in many developing countries the information infrastructure is still deficient. The system is characterized by a shortage of resources, particularly in terms of trained manpower. In an effort to improve this situation CTA, in collaboration with a number of other organizations, developed the General Programme for Training in Agricultural Information (PROGEFIA). Among other objectives, PROGEFIA seeks to strengthen existing training capabilities in agricultural information, to develop and implement specialized courses and to support existing educational programmes. The Directory of training specialists in agricultural information is an inventory of resource persons in agricultural information training, and the supporting databases constitute an invaluable resource base for the identification of experts for a sustainable training programme in agricultural information. By identifying existing manpower resources in this field, the directory will make it possible to pool resources and avoid duplication. Entries in the directory are arranged in alphabetical order by country of residence of the trainer. Several indexes have been included to enhance identification of appropriate trainers. Indexes are provided for names, subjects based on PROGEFIA profiles, and geographical areas of experience which encompasses both individual countries as well as regions and continents. English is the primary language of the directory, although French cross-references have been included where appropriate to enhance the usefulness of the directory.
