Horticulture plays a major role in the economies of ACP countries, by providing the people with a balanced diet and by ensuring employment in rural areas and an income derived from exports. However, there are also many risks involved in this sector, whether it is technical, commercial, financial or statutory. A large proportion of the off-season fruits and vegetables produced in ACP countries is exported to Europe. Every year targets are set to strengthen the competitiveness of ACP countries in the international trade of fresh fruits and vegetables, and analyses of ACP performances in European markets are made. Production of ACP fresh fruits and vegetables for export to the EEC is the proceedings of a CTA seminar held on the subject in December 1991 in Arnhem, the Netherlands. The proceedings reviews the role of ACP exporters and European importers, highlights weaknesses and assesses how they can be overcome. Other subjects covered include the current situation of trade between ACP and EEC countries. The paper also emphasizes the importance of coordinating efforts between trade and research with a view to improving the quality of fruits and vegetable produced in ACP countries for export to European markets.
