dcterms.description | Rapid political, economic and social changes around the world, present many challenges to cooperative enterprise. To take hold of these challenges, and to ensure a significant role for cooperatives in the future, demands urgent innovative thinking and intense practical work within the cooperative framework. The world of cooperative enterprise explores areas fundamental to the effectiveness of any healthy cooperative if it is to position itself for take-off into the 21st century. Three main themes examine issues critical to cooperatives around the world: involving members of large cooperatives; effective governance in cooperatives; and trends in cooperative legislation. These themes are fundamentally and intrinsically linked. A participative, informed cooperative membership is a prerequisite for effective corporate governance, which in turn is inevitably influenced by cooperative legislation. No cooperative can afford to deceive itself that these fundamentals are peripheral to, or remote from, their own operations. Over 30 authors from more than a dozen countries have contributed thought-provoking articles to the book.
