| dcterms.description | The Asia Soil Conservation Network for the Humid Tropics (ASOCON) is an inter-country network whose founding members are the People's Republic of China (Southeastern Provinces), Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines and Thailand. They are all located within the Humid Tropical Zone of South East Asia and therefore have broadly similar ecological conditions and are subject to similar physical risks of soil erosion. Membership of ASOCON, within each country, is organized through a National Network, membership of which is open to government departments, educational institutions and NGOs concerned with soil and water conservation at the small-scale farm level. ASOCON which is supported by FAO, was established with the overall objectives of assisting in developing, within the member countries, the expertise required to assist their smallscale farmers to use the land available to them on a productive and sustainable basis. The work programme of the Network includes the collection, compilation and periodic dissemination of information about soil and water conservation practices. improved recommendations are documented with a view to technology transfer. Specific case studies of past and ongoing conservation projects are prepared for the purpose of subjecting them to economic and financial appraisal and evaluating the reasons for success or failure. Periodic regional workshops and seminars are arranged. These cover such subject areas as project design, the economics of conservation and the development of conservation farming systems. ASOCON arranges inter-country exchange of research and extension staff, study tours and regional training opportunities, in recognition of the experience, expertise and resources existing within the region. Advice and training are provided in the preparation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of national programmes and projects, especially those of regional interest in the field of soil and water conservation. A newsletter, Contour, (see Spore 30 - Newslines) provides a flow of information between participating countries in the Network about developments with regard to soil and water conservation in the region.
