Abstract/Description
The research, training, and development activities related to sweet potato, yam, cassava, and aroids, carried out by the root crop program of the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Trinidad and Tobago), are presented. The present interest in cassava is its use as a maize substitute in animal feeds. The following activities are in progress: introduction and evaluation of CIAT cv. in multilocational trials; study of selected cassava lines resistant to CBB; development of improved cassava production through mechanized systems of planting and harvesting, and fertilizer and herbicide application; development of systems for chipping and drying cassava for use in animal feeds. Se presentan las actividades de investigacion, capacitacion y desarrollo relacionadas con la batata, el name, la yuca y los aroides del programa de cultivos de raices del Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Trinidad y Tobago). El actual interes en yuca es su utilizacion como substituto del maiz en alimentos para animales. Se desarrollan las siguientes actividades: introduccion y evaluacion de cv. del CIAT en ensayos multilocalizados; estudio de lineas de yuca seleccionadas resistentes al CBB; desarrollo de la produccion de yuca mejorada a traves de sistemas de siembra y cosecha mecanizadas, y aplicacion de fertilizantes y herbicidas; desarrollo de sistemas de trozado y secado de yuca para su utilizacion en alimentos para animales.
