dcterms.description | An extensive consultation process between NGOs, farmers groups and scientists is currently under way to develop an International Ecological Agriculture Network (IEAN). Ongoing discussions point to the urgent need to give more support to the great variety of existing networks in order to make them more effective and to have an impact on mainstream thinking and institutions. IEAN aims to support and enhance the work of existing networks, to strengthen and empower them, to fill the gaps, and to ensure the different groups are linked up and can benefit from each other's expertise. It aims to bring currently marginalized ecological agriculture into the mainstream. The network will provide an informal forum for a diversity of organizations: farmers' associations, NGOs, women's groups, indigenous groups, researcers, plus supportive representatives from government extension services and international intergovernmental organizations - all organizations interested in developing, promoting or simply gaining expertise in ecological agriculture and in generating the necessary political change to achieve it. It will complement the work of these existing groups, organizations and networks, focusing on the need to overcome the numerous and varied barriers which impeded the rapid uptake of ecological agriculture and providing a forum for developing strategies to achieve change.
