dcterms.description | In Mauritania animal production represents 8% of the Gross National Product (GNP), and thus, as in all the Sahelian states, it has a profound effect on the country's economy. Cattle-rearing, despite the effects of the drought, is on the up-turn, and there is a marked increase in numbers. However, recent rainfall patterns have caused the nomads to change their traditional routes, and at the same time the population is tending to be less mobile. In order to address the problems of pastoralism and to promote sustainable production systems, a broad and comprehensive approach is needed. For this reason, CTA and IEMVT have collated a considerable body of information in this one volume giving the various factors which have a bearing on pastoralism in Mauritania. The publishers of the atlas have sought local help, and have integrated into it work done by CNERV, AGRHYMET and the Mauritanian pastoral services. The Mauritanian atlas is the most recent of a series published by CTA. Already in print are Niger (Spore 8), Burkina Faso (Spore 11), Chad (Spore 13), Mali (Spore 17) and Senegal (Spore 26). | en |
