Although bananas and plantains play major roles in the diets and economies of developing countries, the production of such crops suffers from a lack of coordinated research and information programmes. It was in response to this need that the International Network for the Improvement of Bananas and Plantains (INIBAP) A seminar designed to develop an information/ documentation system for this network was held from June 2-5, 1987 at INIBAP's base in Montpellier, France. It was organized bv CTA and the International Development Research Centre with technical assistance from the Technological Research and Exchange Group (GRET) in Paris. Among those present were representatives of databases and information sources concerning bananas and plantains, researchers working on these crops, and officials from producing countries. Apart from deciding that the INIBAP network should remain decentralized, the seminar made numerous concrete proposals for each different geographic zone designed to ensure efficient regional coordination for both feeding the network with information and taking advantage of its services. As an example, it was agreed to develop a thesaurus to help standardize the terminology in this field. Other proposals included directories, bibliographies and an information bulletin.
