In 1979 Sesbania rostrata was recognized as a nitrogen-fixing legume. Since that time it has become a model for teams all over the world to study. After some ten years of research 'Sesbania scientists' felt a need to organize a seminar on the subject so that they could pool all their uncoordinated data. try to match present day agronomic needs with the capabilities of basic research and set out priority lines of action. The first international colloquium on S. rostrata held in Dakar, Senegal, was financed by CTA and brought together more than 50 scientists from 18 countries who exchanged the results of their multi-disciplinary research into S. rostrata and set up networks for exchange of information and biological material.
