Schistosomiasis (bilharzia), the parasitic disease transmitted by snails, afflicts more than 200 million people living in 76 tropical countries according to WHO estimates. It has now been found that the soapberry plant (Phytolacca dodecandara) can be used to produce a molluscicide that is able to destroy the snails that transmit the disease. The soapberries' properties were first recorded by doctors in Ethiopia who noticed that the snails died downstream from where women were doing their washing using a traditional detergent made from dried, powdered soapberries. Conventional molluscicides are expensive and the soapberry provides a cheap and effective alternative. Its discoverer Dr Lemma says that soapberry can also be used to kill insect larvae, including those of domestic flies and the anopheles mosquitos which transmit malaria.
