dcterms.description | Nigeria has so far not been able to achieve self-sufficiency in food production. Rising domestic food prices, large increases In food Imports decreasing agricultural exports and escalating unemployment statistics testify to a continuing lack of success. Strategy for agricultural development in Nigeria: focus on Rivers State is a thoughtful, carefully planned book which presents general concepts and principles as well as specific information on a number of agricultural topics. It is part of the continuing effort to evolve an efficient agricultural development process in Rivers State in particular and Nigeria in general. The book is divided into four sections. Section 1 has five chapters which deal with crop production and aspects of forest development. Section 2 deals with animal production and health. Section 3 looks at agricultural extension and agrobusinesses and Section 4 discusses research, development and training. Each chapter is written by an expert in that field and, where appropriate, cultural information is provided with details of the different cultivars available and the growing conditions required Socio-economic factors are considered in context and proposals are made for further research and development. The editors have collated the material presented with the needs of researchers, scholars farmers, students, government officials and also the general reader in mind.
