The use of locally-available raw materials has halved the cost of pig production in the Solomon Islands. In trials funded by the Overseas Development Administration's Geographical Divlsion, local copra meal, cassava and fishmeal were fed to pigs instead of imported cereals and soya. Fishmeal concentrate can also be added to feeds of fresh coconut and cassava, although it is still necessary to import vitamins and minerals. Such has been the demand for the local feed that a feedmill at Mamara has been brought back into operation, and now produces 40-60 tonnes per month.
