In 1996, the European Commission banned Malagasy fish products for allegedly not meeting food standards. The ban has now been lifted after consultation and some drastic measures, and the fifteen export companies involved can resume work. The fish sector suffered badly from the ban, since it is a leading exporter, with 80% of exports going to Europe. Lost revenue in 1997 amounted to h 16 million. Potential annual fish production is estimated at 450,000 tonnes, with actual output being 120,000 tonnes, of which 26,000 tonnes are exported.en
