dcterms.description | Is there something rotten in the world of agriculture? Despite new technologies and the increases in production and efficiency, still half the world is hungry while millions of others eat too much and unhealthily. In Agri-Culture, Jules Pretty argues that people have become more and more disconnected from nature and natural resources. The establishment of parks and reserves for people to visit or to protect the world s biodiversity are indicators of this. And yet, in many instances, farmers worldwide have conserved or developed sustainable methods of growing food; their numbers and areas are increasing. Pretty collected these examples during earlier work and now this book is crammed with them. He advocates a thorough reform of policies and institutions to accommodate a reformed food system too. And, as he rightfully claims, this will require a new way of thinking a new culture that somehow reconnects people to the natural resources that surround them.
