dcterms.descriptionThe Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences is the only agricultural university in Sweden and is the national agricultural research institute responsible to the Ministry of Agriculture. The focus of work is on the sustainable use of biological natural resources, where SLU has a national responsibility to develop and convey knowledge in agriculture, animal sciences, aquaculture, forestry, horticulture, landscape planning, natural resources management and veterinary sciences, as well as for training in all these areas. SLU has campuses and field stations in more than 30 locations in Sweden. The academic work is carried out at 70 departments divided between the three faculties of agriculture, forestry and veterinary sciences. Some 150 foreign students and visiting researchers study or work at the university. Three to five percent of the university's total resources are devoted to development cooperation, primarily financed by the Swedish Agency Research Cooperation SAREC the Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA) and the university. The main part of the cooperation is carried out by the regular staff of the individual departments of the university. The International Rural Development Centre (IRDC) coordinates major programmes which involves several departments and also with the activities in collaborating countries. The main focus of SLU's involvement in development cooperation is in academic education and research within SLU's sphere of competence. This is carried out through collaboration with national universities and research institutes as well as with international research institutes and UN organizations. While part of the training and research takes place in Sweden, as much as possible of the activities are carried out in the collaborating country. The major collaborating countries are found in Eastern and Southern Africa, but also in West Africa, Asia and Latin America. SLU is currently involved in three major education programmes in Ethiopia, Mozambique and Vietnam. The bilateral programme in Ethiopia aims at developing the Forestry Faculty of Alemaya University of Agriculture, and includes staff support to, and training of, the faculty. The staff development includes PhD training of individual staff members, mainly in Sweden, and a 2-year MSc programme for two batches of foresters, carried out in Ethiopia and including specializations in plantation forestry, farm forestry or management of natural forests. For Mozambique the collaboration is with the Faculty of Agriculture at the Eudardo Mondlane University, Maputo, in the fields of agricultural economics and agricultural engineering, and includes staff support and staff development. The programme in Vietnam is a 2-year MSc training in 'Sustainable livestock systems' carried out in Vietnam but with students from several countries, particularly Ethiopia and Tanzania. In an effort to develop approaches, methods and technologies for smallholder agriculture, SLU is engaged in a number of 'development methods' projects financed by SIDA and carried out in collaboration with FAO in the fields of agricultural operations technology, farming systems, 'forest, trees and people' and plant protection. To further strengthen its capacity to collaborate in the development of the smallholder sector, SLU is presently planning research and training in the following broad inter-disciplinary themes: agricultural systems, ecology-environment-natural resources, livestock and veterinary medicine, and socio-economics. Research results are published in different university and departmental publications series. IRDC publishes Rural development studies, IRDC working papers, IRDC currents and FTP newsletter (FTP, Forests, Trees and People).
