| dcterms.description | The BEST (Belize Enterprise for Sustained Technology) is a private non-profit making organization managed and operated by Belizeans and dedicated to improving and sustaining the economic, social and cultural wellbeing of low income people of Belize. Care is taken to ensure that this is consistent with the country's overall development strategy. BEST provides training and technical assistance in accounting, finance, agriculture, marketing, business and economic development. It provides this service to community-based enterprises engaged in agriculture, agro-industry, fisheries and related activities. Training is tailor-made to suit the situation. It requires the active participation of people in their own enterprises, helping them to improve the quality of their lives and en couraging self reliance. BEST achieves its objectives through close working relationships with existing and newly-formed production, processing and marketing cooperatives and with farmers' associations. Simple accounting, cost control and management information systems are put in place and are used in monitoring the performance of the enterprise, assessing prospective operational changes and evaluating expansion opportunities. Alter native crops are identified and selected, low-cost production methods are introduced, improved postharvest techniques are put in practice and enhanced packaging and distribution methods implemented. Environmental education and sustainable agriculture are emphasized and the participation of women in the social and economic development of Belize is actively promoted. BEST's operations are financed primarily by international funding agencies but clients are required to pay a fee for the services they receive. Clients from low income groups are not expected to meet more than 15% of total costs. An 8-page magazine, The BEST News, is published quarterly.
