The European Commission (EC) has published a booklet, European Community Support for the Private Sector in ACP Countries, which outlines the way it can support the private sector in Africa and the Caribbean and Pacific Regions. The fourth Lomé Convention introduced significant changes in the way the EC supports enterprises. This booklet gives examples of how the support now operates in practice. The EC offers assistance at different levels depending on the circumstances: at the macro level, for intermediary institutions serving the private sector, and at the enterprise level. It may take the form of structural adjustment support and technical assistance to governments, financial and technical support to build the intermediary agencies, project financing and support for credit facilities, or assistance for investment promotion, business contact and partnerships. The booklet has seven sections including one devoted to the four main programmes managed by the Commission, one describing the European Investment Bank, and another on the Centre for the Development of Industry.
