Training courses, seminars and farmer group follow-up activities on the subject of natural crop protection, organized in Cameroon since 1-988, have proved that farmers' experiences are a rich source of ideas for those involved in adaptive research. Through these courses and meetings a considerable amount of information on indigenous methods of crop protection and plants traditionally used to protect crops has been gathered. On the basis of this information trials are now being carried out at the Rural Training Centre, Mfonta and on farmers fields. Good results against leaf-eating caterpillars, aphids and bugs have been obtained using sprays made from the following plants: Jim son weed (Datura stramonium), castor oil (Ricinus communis), God's tobacco (Lobelia columnaris) and papaya (Carica papaya). The scientists involved feel that the work of farmers as researchers on their own fields is of great importance and should be intensified, but so also should that of research institutions. Both approaches should proceed hand-in-hand. Benhold Schrimpf - RTC Mfonta PO Box 72 - Bamenda CAMEROON or Irene Dziekan - Inades Bamenda PO Box 252 - Bamenda CAMEROONen
