Item Manual for Scaling Community-Based Breeding Programs for Sheep and Goats(Manual, 2024-10-30) Ministry of Agriculture, EthiopiaThe Community-Based Breeding Program (CBBP) for sheep and goats in Ethiopia has proven to be a successful genetic improvement project since its establishment in 2009. This program effectively involves local communities in various aspects, such as identifying and collecting data on animals, managing and using breeding sires, utilizing traditional knowledge, and mobilizing community flocks to enhance their sheep and goat stock. It achieves this by engaging community members in participatory selection processes based on the estimated breeding value of the animals while also considering the specific needs of the community. The manual consists of two parts: Implementing a Scaling Framework for a Specific Breed of Animals and Procedure for Implementation.Item Training on the Improved NextGen Approach (PyCPT2.8) for Seasonal and Subseasonal Forecasting with the Ethiopian Meteorological Institute(Report, 2024-07-01) Grossi, Amanda; Mason, Simon J.New AICCRA-supported state-of-the-art forecasting systems are enabling regional and national meteorological agencies to generate timely and decision-relevant climate information for their agricultural sectors. Being able to generate and have access to reliable, location-specific forecasts enables the kinds of tailored advisories that farmers as well as staff from humanitarian and development agencies need for planning and supporting agricultural growth and resilience. It also enables anticipatory action in advance of emergencies. Towards the AICCRA project’s vision of actualizing a climate-smart African future driven by science and innovation in agriculture, the technical training on PyCPT immediately followed a workshop organized by the World Food Programme (WFP) in partnership with the IRI and EMI on anticipatory action trigger design, financing arrangements, and evidence generation in Ethiopia. This complementary workshop and initiative through WFP aimed to strengthen national capacities and systems for climate risk management, based on the generation, use and integration of tailored climate forecasts (such as those generated with PyCPT) and triggers into an Anticipatory Action Plan (AAP) including forecast-based finance (FbF) against drought. As such, the AICCRA-supported workshop in tandem with the AAP efforts through the WFP represent an important joint effort towards moving beyond access of climate information to advancing its use in decision-making, aligned with the goals of AICCRA Additional Finance (AF).Item Highlights on Livestock Feed and Forage Research and Scaling Activities(Presentation, 2024-04-04) Mekonnen, Kindu; Bezabih, Melkamu; Gebreyes, Million; Adie, Aberra; Alene, Temesgen; Tessema, Fikadu; Seifu, Haimanot; Whitbread, AnthonyItem Forage observation trial at Shurmo Kebele in Lemo district, Ethiopia(Presentation, 2024-04-18) Tesema, Fikadu; Mekonnen, Kindu; Amare, FikaduItem Forage variety release and registration guidelines(Presentation, 2024-04-04) Dejene, MesfinItem Forage screening initiatives in different agro-ecologies and socioeconomic setups(Presentation, 2024-04-17) Alemayehu, Liulseged; Mekonnen, Kindu; Alene, TemesgenItem Overview of the ILRI forage genebank collection and development of best bet forage genotypes(Presentation, 2024-04-19) Habte, ErmiasItem How does the World Bank fund leveraging resources to improve the reach and uptake of feed and forage innovations?(Presentation, 2024-01-29) Mekonnen, Kindu; Gebreyes, Million; Bezabih, Melkamu; Whitbread, Anthony M.Presented at a consultative meeting with the World Bank evaluation team, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 29 January 2024. The project has tested a combination of participatory tools at multiple levels, with systems thinking and concern for sustainable and diversified livelihoods. Bottom-up approaches guided the selection of technological interventions that could address the priority farming system challenges of the communities, leading to higher uptake levels and increased impact. Joint learning, appropriate technology selection, and the creation of an enabling environment such as the formation of farmer research groups, the establishment of innovation platforms, and capacity development for institutional and technical innovations were key to this study. The study concludes by identifying key lessons that focus more on matching innovations to community needs and geographies, systems orientation/integration of innovations, stepwise approaches to enhance the adoption of innovations, documenting farmers’ capacity to modify innovations, building successful partnerships, and facilitating wider scaling of innovations for future implementation of agricultural research for development projects.Item Estimating the Return on Investment(Poster, 2022-12-31) Caulfield, Mark E.; Hammond, James; Mekonnen, Kindu; Thorne, Peter J.Item Feeds and Forages Technology Parks – Legacy of Africa RISING Ethiopian Highlands Project(Poster, 2022-11-30) Adie, Aberra; Bezabih, Melkamu; Dubale, Workneh; Asfaw, Addisu; Gebreyes, Million; Seifu, Haimanot; Mekonnen, KinduItem Farmer to farmer seed exchange among Africa RISING beneficiary farmers(Poster, 2022-11-30) Gebreyes, Million; Assefa, Habtemariam; Mekonnen, Kindu; Kemal, Seid; Bishaw, Zewdie; Aynewa, Yetsedaw; Alene, Temesgen; Dubale, Workneh; Seifu, HaimanotItem Opportunities and Threats in Scaling African RISING Innovations: Using Scaling Scan Framework(Poster, 2022-11-15) Gebreyes, Million; Assefa, Habtemariam; Mekonnen, Kindu; Kemal, Seid; Bishaw, Zewdie; Aynewa, Yetsedaw; Bezabih, Melkamu; Adie, Aberra; Alene, Temesgen; Dubale, Workneh; Asfaw, Addisu; Seifu, HaimanotItem Seasonal Food Availability Calendar in Basona, Sinana and Lemo Woredas of Amhara, Oromia and SNNP Regions of Ethiopia(Poster, 2022-12-31) Gebru, Mestawet; Baye, Kaleab; Ekesa, BeatriceItem Perceived Benefits, Existing Opportunities, and Barriers of Using Avocado in Agri-Food Systems in Lemo Woreda, Hadiya Zone, Southern Ethiopia(Poster, 2022-12-31) Gebru, Mestawet; Baye, Kaleab; Demissie, Minilik; Bogale, Solomon; Ekesa, BeatriceItem Social Dynamics and Sustainable Intensification in Ethiopia(Poster, 2022-12-31) Bullock, Renee; Yami, Mastewal; Miriti, PhilipItem High Value Fruit Trees (HVFT) Production in the Highlands of Ethiopia: Enhancing Household Income, Food Security and nutrition(Poster, 2022-12-31) Woldemeskel, Endalkachew; Gebreyes, Million; Mekonnen, Kindu; Dubale, Workneh; Seifu, HaimanotItem Regional Radio Engagement in Broadcasting Livestock Feed and Forage Innovations(Poster, 2022-12-31) Mesfin, Hilemariam; Mekonnen, Kindu; Gebreyes, Million; Bezabih, Melkamu; Adie, Aberra; Assefa, Getnet; Seifu, HaimanotItem Sustainable Intensification Innovations Diffusion: Africa RISING Experience(Poster, 2022-12-31) Assefa, Habtemariam; Mekonnen, Kindu; Gebreyes, Million; Asfaw, Addisu; Alene, Temesgen; Ebrahim, Mohammed; Dubale, Workneh
