Item Key descriptors for fodder trees(Book, 2023-06-20) Muchugi, Alice; Hanson, Jean; Habte, Ermias; Sime, Yonas; Alemayehu, Arega; Alercia, Adriana Raquel; Cerutti, Ana Laura; López, FranciscoThe Key descriptors for fodder trees consist of an initial minimum set of characterization and evaluation descriptors for some species of the family Fabaceae (Leguminosae). This strategic set aims at facilitating access to and utilization of these species and it does not exclude the addition of other descriptors later. This work has been done jointly with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and the FAO International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. The list was based on a preliminary set of descriptors developed by ILRI. In addition, internet searches were carried out looking for the most updated information on relevant characteristics and traits. The original list was subsequently integrated with evaluation traits. Special attention was given to the inclusion of descriptors relevant to germplasm utilization and abiotic stresses of particular importance in the context of emerging adverse weather events, which are expected to intensify under current and future climate challenges. The key set of access and utilization descriptors was defined through an online survey, in which 24 experts from 14 different organizations and universities from 13 countries participated. Survey results were subsequently validated in consultation with a Core Advisory Group (see “Contributors”) led by Alice Muchugi and Jean Hanson from ILRI. The strategic set of data standards is designed to facilitate access to and utilization of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture. Together with passport information (Alercia et al. 2015, 2018), descriptors are critical to the effective sharing of characterization and evaluation data and to the efficient use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture.Item Distribution of germplasm at ILRI(Video, 2010-04-01) International Livestock Research InstituteThis video was made to document best practices for use in crop genebanks as part of a project on management of crop diversity as a global public good under the System-wide Genetic Resources Programme of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research. Este caso muestra cómo el uso de herramientas colaborativas y medios sociales para la construcción colectiva de conocimientos puede ser aplicado a una iniciativa compleja y ambiciosa de cobertura mundial.Item Knowledge sharing on best practices for managing crop genebanks(Journal Article, 2010-09-20) Jorge, M.A.B.; Claessens, G.; Hanson, Jean; Dulloo, Mohammad Ehsan; Goldberg, E.D.; Thormann, I.; Alemayehu, S.; Gacheru, E.; Amri, A.; Benson, E.; Dumet, D.; Roux, N.; Rudebjer, P.G.; Hamilton, Ruaraidh S.; Sánchez, I.; Sharma, S.; Taba, S.; Upadhyaya, Hari D.; Houwe, Ines van denThe Crop Genebank Knowledge Base (CGKB) is an initiative of the Consultative Group of International Agriculture Research (CGIAR) System-wide Genetic Resources Programme (SGRP). The CGKB was created for sharing knowledge about best practices for managing plant genetic resources (PGR), and making effective decisions about genebank management. Genebank practices from CGIAR Centers and national genebanks were gathered for nine crops (banana, barley, cassava, chickpea, forage grasses and legumes, maize, rice and wheat). This information will help PGR professionals to participate in a global crop conservation effort. An interactive approach with many partners and stakeholders was used to gather published and unpublished information about genebank management. Information on crop-specific best practices was initially collected from crop experts using pre-defined forms. In parallel, a web portal was developed using the open-source content management system (CMS) Joomla!. The CMS allows several editors to maintain pages and update them. Other participatory tools such as wiki pages, a blog, a discussion forum and online forms have been set up to gather future contributions, including information on other crops. The site provides a one-stop platform for information on conservation, characterization, regeneration and safety duplication of each of the nine crops. It also provides information on general (non-crop-specific) genebank management procedures, as well as a comprehensive bibliography of online publications, a glossary, links to relevant external websites, video and photo materials, and training modules. This paper discusses a process of collective action to develop a multi-institutional web platform, highlights important criteria for success, challenges and major lessons learned, and proposes options for the way forward.Item The importance of genebanks: part 2(Video, 2010-04-06) International Livestock Research InstituteThis video explains the importance of genebanks and their need in order to conserve valuable crop diversity.Item The importance of genebanks: part 1(Video, 2010-04-06) International Livestock Research InstituteThis video explains the importance of genebanks and their need in order to conserve valuable crop diversity.Item Knowledge sharing on best practices for managing crop genebanks(Presentation, 2010-04-29) Jorge, M.A.B.; Claessens, G.; Hanson, Jean; Dulloo, Mohammad Ehsan; Goldberg, E.D.; Thormann, I.; Alemayehu, S.; Gacheru, E.; Amri, A.; Benson, E.; Dumet, D.; Roux, N.; Rudebjer, P.G.; Hamilton, Ruaraidh S.; Sánchez, I.; Sharma, S.; Taba, S.; Upadhyaya, Hari D.; Houwe, Ines van denItem Learning to share knowledge for global agricultural progress(Journal Article, 2010) Staiger Rivas, Simone; Galiè, Alessandra; Hack, Bernhard; Jorge, M.A.B.; Meadu, Vanessa; Tateossian, F.; Salokhe, G.; White, N.Web 2.0 tools combined with face-to-face methods offer new opportunities for better knowledge sharing across disciplines, languages and borders. This article comprises an overview and case studies – the personal accounts of six participants and one facilitator of a 2008 Workshop on Knowledge Sharing, sponsored by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research. It lays out the rationale for, and lessons learned from, those efforts, as well as from a second workshop hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. It explains why, in today's culture of self-directed learning, group experiences remain essential. The authors describe their learning trajectories and application of knowledge sharing tools and methods in their work.Item Knowledge base for best practices of genebank management: why and how it was developed(Poster, 2009-10) Jorge, M.A.B.; Claessens, G.; Hanson, Jean; Dulloo, Mohammad Ehsan; Goldberg, E.D.; Thormann, I.; Alemayehu, S.
