Using the conceptual framework as a guide, a case study of priority-setting in food and agricultural policy research in Malawi is presented. Lessons are derived from the Malawi approach for similar attempts elsewhere. Priority-setting in policy research provides an opportunity to better organize the research programs and to ensure the user participation in policy research for increased use of research information in policy decisionmaking. It is argued that the process of priority-setting in policy research should be seen as an integral part of the process of policy formulation and implementation.Item La vision global del proyecto 2020 y sus implicaciones de politica para la subregion(Book Chapter, 1996) Pinstrup-Andersen, PerItem The Egyptian food subsidy system: operation and effects on income distribution(Journal Article, 1996-11) Ali, Sonia M.; Adams, Richard H., Jr.Item World food markets into the 21st century: environmental and resource constraints and policies(Journal Article, 1997-09) Rosegrant, Mark W.; Ringler, ClaudiaThe article reviews and synthesizes the evidence on biophysical limits to crop productivity; plant genetic resources and biotechnology; the availability of plant nutrients; soil and land degradation; the increasing scarcity and declining quality of water; and the impact of global climate change on agriculture.Item Can everybody be well fed by 2020 without damaging natural resources?(Conference Paper, 1997) Pinstrup-Andersen, Per; Pandya-Lorch, Rajul; International Maize and Wheat Improvement CenterThis lecture discusses six actions essential to meeting global food needs without damaging the natural environment: selectively strengthening the capacity of the governments of developing countries, investing in the poor, accelerating agricultural productivity, assuring the sound management of natural resources, and expanding and realigning international development assistance. In this article we describe an approach used in Malawi for the past three years to develop a decentralized capacity to analyse drought management and disaster prevention programmes. A conceptual framework is presented which identifies the areas in which capacity strengthening is required and lessons from the Malawi experience are presented. Various issues relating to the efficiency of capacity building programmes are discussed. We argue that continuous dialogue between development researchers and decision‐makers, and between trainers in academic institutions and donor agencies, is essential for achieving the goals of improved capacity for drought management and disaster prevention.Item Facing donor community with informed policy decisions: lessons from capacity strengthening for policy analysis in Malawi(Journal Article, 1997-04-10) Babu, Suresh ChandraItem Rural services, rural infrastructure and regional development in India(Journal Article, 1995-07) Wanmali, Sudhir; Islam, YassirItem Pricing conduct of spatially differentiated markets(Book Chapter, 1995) Mendoza, Meyra Sebello; Rosegrant, Mark W.Item The costs and benefits of agroforestry to farmers(Journal Article, 1995) Current, Dean; Lutz, Ernst; Scherr, Sara J.Item Farmer costs and benefits from agroforestry and farm forestry projects in Central America and the Caribbean: implications for policy(Journal Article, 1995-05) Current, Dean; Scherr, Sara J.Item Food from peace: breaking the links between conflict and hunger(Journal Article, 1998) Messer, Ellen; Cohen, Marc J.; D'Costa, JashintaItem Poverty and inequality in Latin America: the impact of adjustment and recovery in the 1980s(Book, 1995) Morley, Samuel[This book] uses recently available household surveys for the majority of Latin American countries to establish what happened to poverty and inequality over the decade and to isolate the main factors that determined the changes observedItem The bank and partners to address development challenges in rural Peru(Newsletter, 2006) Whitehead, JohnItem Women, men and trees: gender, power and property in forest and agrarian landscapes(Conference Paper, 1995) Rocheleau, Dianne; Edmunds, David
