Abstract/Description
Economics literature about the impacts of genetically engineered crops in developing economies
bEcon is a web-based bibliography of economic literature focusing on the impact of genetically engineered (GE) crops in developing countries. It was initially developed by researchers at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) as part of the literature review for IFPRI’s 2009 Food Policy Review, "Measuring the Economic Impacts of Transgenic Crops in Developing Agriculture during the First Decade: Approaches, Findings, and Future Directions". After 2009 and before 2016 IFPRI devoted some efforts to update and maintain this web-based bibliography.
The scope of bEcon has now expanded to include not only an updated bibliography, but also a searchable database of the main indicators included in all Africa-focused papers, bEcon for Africa. This effort is part of the Bill and Melinda Gates funded project “Biotechnology and Biosafety Rapid Assessment Platform – BioRAPP”, a project that, among other policy related objectives, will develop and implement ex ante assessments in 5 African countries (Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Uganda) using secondary data. The indicators collected in this literature will be used in the rapid ex ante assessments and the goal is also to provide national researchers with a tool kit to support policy decisions.
