Item Evaluating Capacity Development: Experiences from Research and Development Organizations around the World(Book, 2003) Horton, Douglas; Alexaki, Anastasia; Bennett-Lartey, Samuel; Brice, Kim N.; Campilan, Dindo; Carden, Fred; Souza Silva, J. de; Le Thanh Duong; Khadar, Ibrahim; Maestrey Boza, Albina; Kayes Muniruzzaman, Imrul; Perez, Jocelyn; Somarriba Chang, Matilde; Vernooy, Ronnie; Watts, JamieThe international community is placing a growing emphasis on developing local capacity as the key to alleviating poverty and hunger in the developing world. Although ensuring the effectiveness of a capacity building effort requires appropriate use of evaluation, few organizations have implemented a system for monitoring or evaluating the changes taking place during organizational development. In January 2000, ISNAR began an ambitious Evaluating Capacity Development project, which aimed to improve capacity development efforts in research and development organizations through the use of evaluation. This book explains how the project used an action learning approach, bringing together people from various countries and different types of organizations. As they conducted six evaluation studies over the course of three years, project participants learned a great deal about capacity development and the process of evaluation. The authors use examples and lessons drawn from the evaluation studies as a basis for making more general conclusions regarding how capacity development efforts and evaluation can help organizations to achieve their missions. Item Developing and Evaluating Capacity in Research and Development Organizations(Brief, 2003-09) Horton, Douglas; Alexaki, Anastasia; Bennett-Lartey, Samuel; Brice, Kim N.; Campilan, Dindo; Carden, Fred; Souza Silva, José de; Le Thanh Duong; Khadar, Ibrahim; Maestrey Boza, Albina; Kayes Muniruzzaman, Imrul; Perez, Jocelyn; Somarriba Chang, Matilde; Vernooy, Ronnie; Watts, JamieThe international aid community is placing a growing emphasis on developing the capacity of local organizations as the key to alleviating poverty and hunger in the developing world. Ensuring the effectiveness of a capacity building effort requires the appropriate use of evaluation. Yet few organizations have systematically monitored or evaluated organizational development processes. In January 2000, ISNAR began its ambitious ""Evaluating Capacity Development"" project, which aims to improve capacity development efforts in research and development organizations through evaluation. This Briefing Paper explains how the project used an action-learning approach, bringing together people from various countries and different types of organizations. These people conducted six evaluation studies over the course of three years, learning a great deal about capacity development and evaluation in the process. One of the key findings was the importance of involving staff and stakeholders in the evaluation process. A participatory approach fosters commitment to building the future of an organization and can speed up decision making. As people ""learn by doing"", they strengthen their own capacity for evaluation and are motivated to pass their knowledge on to others. When conducted in a participatory and structured way, evaluation can make a substantial contribution to improving overall organizational performance. Item Knowing Where You're Going: Information Systems for Agricultural Research Management(Report, 2001) Vernon, RichardThis book provides agricultural research managers and information specialists within agricultural research organizations with a rich source of ideas, concepts, methodologies, and explanations in managing information. We need to apply new thinking to modernising and sustaining agri-food systems as the impacts of climate change, unpredictability in global trade, migration and conflicts threaten progress towards the goals of zero hunger and end to poverty and malnutrition. Innovation in all aspects of the agrifood system, from production to processing, financing and marketing as well as in how producers organise themselves to address these challenges is critical. To foster the transition into modernised food systems that provide sustainable incomes and nutrition for farmers/ fisherfolk and rural communities, we need new and or improved technologies, business models, laws and policies and empowered farmers and producer organisations. Strengthening public-private-producer partnerships and the linkages between agri-SMEs, financing institutions and governments is key. A shift of mindset is needed that values farmers as entrepreneurs and farming as a business.Item Africa Agriculture Trade Monitor 2019(Book, 2019-09) Bouët, Antoine; Odjo, Sunday PierreTrade is key to Africa’s long-term sustainable economic growth and transformation. Boosting intra-African agricultural trade can help generate jobs for women and youth in agricultural value chains, raise incomes, and improve food security and nutrition. Recognizing the enormous potential benefits offered by trade, African leaders reaffirmed their commitment, through Agenda 2063 and the Malabo Declaration, to promoting greater intra-African trade. They have committed to raising the level of trade-related investments and to improving trade infrastructure, policies, institutions, and trade facilitation. Agenda 2063 calls for fast-tracking the establishment of a continental free trade area while the Malabo Declaration calls for tripling intra-African trade in agricultural commodities and services by 2025.Item Profiling Bioactive Compounds and Key Nutrients in Pacific Island Crops and Marine Resources(Book, 2019-01) Singh, SunilThis report gives insights into the current status of knowledge on composition of key nutrients and bioactive compounds, known or associated with traditional crops and seafood consumed in seven Pacific Island countries, namely Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Vanuatu. Information was initially gathered through guided interviews with traditional knowledge experts. Based on their responses and a systematic literature review of 433 scientific articles, a total of 75 crops and marine resources were identified as commonly consumed and/or having health and nutrition benefits or foods which could be better used in the daily diets. Traditional leaders also gave reasons for declining consumption and limited utilisation of traditional foods. These included loss of traditional varieties, e.g. breadfruit and yam; loss of traditional knowledge on edible plants and seaweed from the wild, and lack of awareness on nutritional value and health benefits.Item Africa agriculture status report 2015: Youth and agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa(Report, 2015-12) Ameyaw, David SarfoEach year, 10 million young Africans enter the continent’s workforce, more than ever before. Although this highlights the great challenge of youth unemployment, it could also be a great opportunity – to encourage youth to be the engine behind the growth of Africa’s agriculture-based economies. Illustrated throughout with tables, boxed examples and graphs, this publication highlights progress encouraging the role of young people in Africa’s socio-economic growth through agriculture. The comprehensive and detailed chapters look at the current status of youth in agriculture, the role of young people in agricultural productivity and entrepreneurship, finance, ICTs and capacity building, and establishing a conducive policy environment for youth engagement. Item Emerging voices in ICT and agriculture / Voix nouvelles des TIC et de l'agriculture(Book, 2013-12) Bellinzas, Giorgio; Matturi, Jenessi; Lohento, KenThe ARDYIS (Agriculture, Rural Development and Youth in the Information Society) project is one of CTA’s recent initiatives with ACP partners, notably created to improve ICT access for rural youth. Its aim is to raise awareness and strengthen the capacity of young people, allowing them to contribute to agriculture and rural development through the use of ICTs. This booklet provides an overview and the results of the essay competition «Youth finding solutions to challenges in agriculture and rural development using ICTs! », one of the many ARDYIS activities. Entries submitted demonstrated that youth are more and more interested in the agricultural sector and supporting them will definitely have a strong impact in attracting more youth to rural areas. Item Sustainable food production practices in the Caribbean - 2(Book, 2015-12) Ganpat, Wayne G.; Isaac, Wendy-Ann P.Alternative, sustainable farming and food systems must be encouraged in the Caribbean region if producers are to maintain a supply of healthy food at reasonable prices. Item Investment guide for the sweet potato sector in the CARIFORUM region for financial institutions(Book, 2017-12) Springer, Basil G.F.This guide aims at introducing financial institutions to the world of sweet potato farming in the CARIFORUM region by showing the potential for investment that exists in the fields of the Caribbean, and at promoting responsible investment that can help the region access export markets. It presents the cycles of production and investment to help potential investors understand the financial and operational requirements associated with sweet potato production, and when a farmer would start to earn the income required to repay a loan. The guide also presents the risks associated with investment in the Caribbean sweet potato sector and basic recommendations for how they could be addressed.Item A passion for video(Book, 2016-12) Bentley, Jeffery; Boa, Eric; Salm, MundieSince 2013, Access Agriculture has been training young professionals from various organisations in six African countries to make farmer-to-farmer videos. The videos are a way of moving ideas faster, and more clearly, beyond borders. The Access Agriculture website hosts the videos by these young professionals, and by other agencies, if the videos meet Access Agriculture’s quality and style standards. Access Agriculture encourages all organisations working in developing countries to invest in translating videos available on the website into any language. Access Agriculture offers a fee-based translation service to anyone interested in using quality videos in their own farmer training programmes. The stories in this volume were gathered as part of a Writeshop held in Nairobi on 9–10 November, in the context of the Access Agriculture Week 9–13 November, 2015Item Les vergers écologiques : Un modèle d'agriculture climato-intelligente responsable et exemplaire(Book, 2017-12-31) Ngo-Samnick, E. Lionelle; Lecuret, Claudine; Guien, Laura; Komivi Messan, Akakpo; Eone, Marthe; Caous, Mélanie; Elleboudt, Romain; Kam, Daniel; Roux, Andréanne; Hiol, PlacideFace au changement climatique qui se profile, nous ne sommes pas tous égaux.
