Abstract/Description
Report of the quinquennial review mission to CIMMYT, with transmittal to TAC by the mission chairman, Sir Ralph Riley. This was the second of such reviews organized by TAC. The report provides a description and history of CIMMYT, and discusses the three major research programs: wheat, maize, and economics. It also deals with CIMMYT's role in the preservation and evaluation of germplasm, relationships with regional and national programs, and training. It covers a variety of supporting services at the center. The panel makes a series of recommendations covering most of the aspects discussed in its report. These include relationships with ICARDA on barley research, incorporation of triticale research and regional services in the core program. The main issues addressed related to breeding for wide scale adaptation, selection in high input conditions, the role of basic research, training, regional and national activities, forward planning and the role of the economic section. The report was discussed by TAC at its Thirteenth and Fourteenth meetings in May and October 1976, and was on the agenda at the CGIAR meeting in October 1976.
