We interviewed experts working on food safety in countries within East Africa, to understand the effects the pandemic had on safety of foods consumed in the region. Several issues were observed, and these were related to: the bulk purchasing of food products, their handling, and storage; the rush to make purchases and supply of expired products or those nearing their expiry periods; the delay of food and feed trucks especially at border points; and the working in shifts, which, given the limited staff, reduced the capacity of food businesses to undertake the usual inspection. Future interventions should consider the negative impacts arising from enforcement of mitigation measures. A One Health approach would promote this.Item Developing benchmarks/guidelines for the food safety curriculum in the East African Community(Brief, 2021-11-01) Mutua, Florence K.; Kang'ethe, Erastus K.; Roesel, Kristina; Grace, DeliaItem A review of the food safety architecture in the East African Community: Animal-source foods, fruits and vegetables(Working Paper, 2021-09-30) Kang'ethe, Erastus K.; Mutua, Florence K.; Roesel, Kristina; Ntawubizi, M.; Kankya, C.; Niragira, S.; Kilima, B.; Gathura, P.; Kuorwel, K.K.; Kiri, A.; Grace, DeliaItem Food safety investments in East Africa(Report, 2021-09) Mutua, Florence K.; Grace, Delia; Watts, C.Foodborne diseases are a threat to public health. They also impose an enormous economic burden, affect food and nutrition security, and can hinder market access and disrupt livelihoods. In 2017–2018, the Global Food Safety Partnership (GFSP), a public-private initiative hosted by the World Bank, undertook an intensive analysis of recent food safety investments in sub-Saharan Africa. GFSP built a database of projects and interviewed key informants. We reviewed the food safety investment database, and data related to countries in East Africa was extracted.Item Food safety training in East Africa: A review of university courses with food safety content(Report, 2021-08-15) Kang'ethe, Erastus K.; Roesel, Kristina; Mutua, Florence K.; Grace, DeliaItem Food safety in East Africa(Report, 2020-02) Mutua, Florence K.; Kang'ethe, Erastus K.; Gómez, A.C.C.; Antoine, L.N.; Grace, DeliaItem Food safety landscape analysis: The maize value chain in Kenya(Report, 2020-06-15) Kang'ethe, Erastus K.; Mutua, Florence K.; Roesel, Kristina; Grace, DeliaItem Food safety landscape analysis: The dairy value chain in Kenya(Report, 2020-06-15) Kang'ethe, Erastus K.; Grace, Delia; Roesel, Kristina; Mutua, Florence K.Item National food safety architecture in Kenya(Report, 2020-06) Kang'ethe, Erastus K.; Mutua, Florence K.; Roesel, Kristina; Grace, Delia
